BBC have been running Sports Personality of the year since 1954, the most successful sport is Athletics with 17 winners. Closest to that is Formula One with 6, and Football & Boxing are on 5 winners a piece. The rest of the winners are made up from the following sports: Cycling, Tennis, Figure skating, Golf, Swimming, Eventing, Snooker, Rugby union, Rowing , Show jumping, Motorcycle racing, Horse racing, Sailing, Darts, Gymnastics and Rallying.

Here are Three Facts you may not know about BBC SPOTY…

1) The only year that 2 people have won it jointly was 1984 when Torvill & Dean picked up the trophy.

2) Only 3 people have won it more than once – Nigel Mansell, Damon Hill and Sir Henry Cooper – Each have 2 trophies to their name.

3) No one has ever won it back to back, Damon Hill came closest winning in ’94 & ’96, Jonathan Edwards split Hill’s 2 wins by winning it in 1995.
